Sound-System Coverage and Speech Intelligibility

A professional system should make the program clear at the back and comfortable at the front. Coverage design is the work of distributing useful direct sound evenly while controlling reflections, delay, noise, and excessive level.

Coverage is geometry

Speaker dispersion, mounting height, angle, seating depth, and room width determine who receives direct sound. A louder speaker is not a substitute for aiming sound at the audience.

Long rooms and outdoor seating may need distributed fill speakers. Those zones must be delayed so arrivals support the main system rather than creating audible echoes.

Intelligibility depends on the whole chain

Microphone distance, talker level, gain structure, room reverberation, background noise, loudspeaker directivity, and system equalization all influence how easily words are understood.

For speech-focused events, clarity is the primary design target. Music systems can then be expanded with low-frequency support and additional zones without sacrificing announcements.

Measure and listen across the audience

Check front, middle, rear, sides, and any overflow areas. Use calibrated measurement where appropriate and listen with representative program material.

The objective is consistent experience, not one impressive position near the mix location.
