Start with DMX structure, then choose the transport
The Entertainment Services and Technology Association lists ANSI E1.11-2024 as the current DMX512-A standard. It defines digital data transmission intended to support communication and mechanical interoperability between controllers and controlled lighting equipment. Wireless systems transport that control data over a radio link, but they do not replace the underlying universe, channel, fixture-mode, and address decisions.
Build the patch before linking radios. Record each fixture label, room position, operating mode, channel footprint, start address, universe, and intended look. The DMX and uplighting planning resource explains how to keep those assignments from overlapping. A receiver that shows a healthy radio link can still control the wrong parameter if its fixture mode or starting address does not match the console file.
Confirm protocol and receiver compatibility
“Wireless DMX” is a category, not a promise that every transmitter will speak to every receiver in every mode. LumenRadio’s April 9, 2026 CRMX Stardust manual documents separate CRMX2, CRMX Classic, W-DMX G3, and W-DMX G4S modes, with different receiver-compatibility limits. It also states that changing transmission protocol requires receivers to be linked again. Those details belong on the equipment plan rather than being discovered after fixtures are distributed around the room.
Inventory the exact transmitter, receiver, fixture, firmware, radio band, and selected protocol. Test one complete signal path on the bench, then link and label the remaining units in small groups. City Theatrical’s current document library separates manuals, quick-start guides, cut sheets, firmware, and safety information; that is the right level of product-specific documentation to bring to the show instead of relying on a generic pairing memory.
Treat RF placement as part of the lighting design
A radio system shares its environment with Wi-Fi, production networks, guest devices, building materials, people, and metal scenery. LumenRadio documents adaptive frequency hopping in its current system and explains that multiple universes coordinate frequency use, but a manufacturer feature is not a substitute for venue verification. ETC likewise presents Multiverse as a way to carry multiple universes while limiting unnecessary radio energy. Neither claim means every receiver location will work without testing.
Place the transmitter and antennas according to their manuals, maintain useful line of sight where possible, keep antennas away from large metal obstructions, and avoid burying receivers behind equipment or dense crowds. Walk the room while running real color fades and cue changes, not only a static blue look. Watch receiver status at the farthest and most obstructed locations. If one position is marginal, move the radio, change the path, add a correctly designed distribution point, or use cable instead of compensating with hope.
Separate battery planning from data planning
Battery-powered uplights solve a power-cable problem; wireless control solves a data-cable problem. Verify both independently. For every fixture and radio device, document the manufacturer-rated runtime under the intended color and intensity, current battery condition, charging time, show duration, setup window, reserve margin, and who checks remaining power. Do not assume an internal backup battery will carry the full event: the current Stardust manual, for example, describes its built-in backup as up to 20 minutes and notes a configuration in which that backup is unavailable.
Program and photograph a comfortable static fallback scene before guests enter. Confirm what the fixtures do when the transmitter loses data, when the controller restarts, and when a receiver is power-cycled. Keep critical architectural and egress lighting separate from decorative show control and follow venue and manufacturer requirements.
