Gain Structure and Feedback Prevention for Events

Feedback is a system relationship, not a random noise. It occurs when sound from a loudspeaker returns to a microphone strongly enough to be amplified again. Better placement and operating discipline usually matter more than aggressive equalization.

Build level from the source forward

Place microphones close enough to the intended source, set input gain for healthy signal without clipping, and maintain headroom through the mixer, processing, and loudspeakers.

Turning up several stages to compensate for a weak source raises noise and reduces control. Good microphone technique creates the strongest starting point.

Improve acoustic gain before processing

Keep microphones behind or outside loudspeaker coverage, aim directional microphones correctly, reduce unnecessary open microphones, and place speakers so the audience—not the stage—is the target.

Equalization can reduce specific resonances, but it cannot repair poor geometry. Excessive cuts may make speech less natural without solving the root cause.

Sound-check the real program

Test the officiant, presenters, readers, band, and playback at realistic positions and operating levels. Empty-room checks should be revisited after guests enter because the acoustic environment changes.

Assign one operator to manage mute states and monitor the system throughout the event.
