Wireless Microphone Reliability and Frequency Coordination

Wireless microphones fail for reasons that are often preventable: incompatible frequencies, poor antenna placement, blocked line of sight, weak batteries, damaged cables, or last-minute changes in the local RF environment.

Coordinate frequencies at the actual location

A frequency that worked at another venue may be occupied at this one. Scan the RF environment, coordinate all wireless channels together, and account for television transmitters and other nearby systems.

Coordination should be repeated when the event location or channel count changes. Multiple systems cannot be treated as isolated devices.

Protect the RF path

Receivers need appropriate antenna placement and a clear path to transmitters. Metal racks, walls, people, distance, and poorly placed distribution hardware can reduce reliability.

Keep antennas and distribution components configured as the manufacturer specifies. Test movement paths during rehearsal, not only while standing beside the receiver rack.

Plan for human and hardware failure

Use fresh or verified batteries, label transmitters, secure bodypacks, inspect antenna and audio cables, and assign one person to monitor RF and audio status.

Critical speaking roles deserve a backup path. A tested wired or alternate wireless microphone can protect the program when conditions change.
