Powered systems simplify many mobile setups
Powered speakers combine amplification and processing inside the enclosure. They can reduce rack space and make small distributed systems faster to deploy, especially when safe power is available near every speaker position.
The tradeoff is that each loudspeaker needs both signal and power. Outdoor or multi-zone events may require longer protected power runs and careful weather planning.
Passive systems centralize amplification
Passive speakers receive amplified signal from a separate rack. Centralizing amplifiers can simplify power distribution and keep electronics away from exposed speaker positions, while making larger arrays easier to manage from one location.
The system must be engineered so amplifier power, impedance, processing, cabling, and protection match the loudspeakers. A passive box is not automatically simpler just because it has fewer connections.
Choose around deployment reality
For ceremonies, presentations, and compact receptions, powered systems often offer useful speed and flexibility. Larger touring, installed, or highly redundant systems may benefit from passive architecture.
The right answer is operational: count the cable paths, circuits, zones, crew, setup window, backup options, and maintenance plan.
