Safer Live-Band Sound Checks: Noise Exposure, Monitoring, and Hearing Protection

A live-band sound check is usually discussed as a technical rehearsal, but it is also part of the working day’s sound exposure. Engineers, musicians, stagehands, photographers, and venue staff may hear repeated high-level bursts before the public program begins, then remain near the system through the performance and load-out. A better plan treats level, duration, position, communication, and recovery time as connected production decisions.

Count the whole workday, not only the performance

Measure where people actually work

Use a calibrated sound level meter to map front of house, stage positions, monitor world, wings, backstage work areas, audience zones, and any quiet or recovery space. NIOSH recommends calibrating an SLM before and after measurements, checking the intended settings, using an appropriate windscreen, and measuring under representative operating conditions. For personal exposure across changing tasks and locations, a dosimeter provides stronger information than one spot reading because it averages level over time and calculates dose.

NIOSH reports that it is tested and validated and can meet Type 2 requirements with a calibrated external microphone; the agency also notes that app measurements may not satisfy regulatory requirements. The goal is not a lifeless stage; it is enough direct sound for the performers and enough system headroom for the engineer to build a controlled mix.

Check one subsystem at a time, then perform a concise full-band pass with a written song section that contains the loudest expected material. Stop between decisions instead of leaving pink noise, loops, or the entire band running while routing is discussed. In-ear monitoring can reduce loudspeaker spill when it is fitted, mixed, limited, and operated responsibly, but it is not automatically hearing protection and can still be used at harmful levels. Select hearing protectors for the task and wearer, confirm fit, keep clean spares available, and never remove protection simply because communication is poor. Use talkback, intercom, text, cue lights, or agreed hand signals so coordination does not require removing hearing protection or leaning into a loud monitor.

Write stop conditions before the check begins: unexpected level jumps, feedback, failed limiting, lost communication, a missing meter, a changed loudspeaker position, or a person reporting pain or sudden hearing symptoms should pause the process for reassessment. Document corrective actions and remeasure whenever system configuration changes.
